Two quick-win techniques to identify your anti-Kryptonites and build your dream career path

When I was an auditor, one of my mistakes was not regularly asking for feedback on my strengths. What I usually ask about are my Kryptonites, ie. weaknesses (metaphor linked to Superman).

But it's a good thing some of the best people I worked with were generous with feedback. They made me more aware of what I'm capable of.

During my employment break before relocating to Belgium, I created an inventory of all my strengths and stuff I enjoy doing. (You'll learn my simple technique to do that below.)

The exercise helped me build my self-awareness.

A vision formed. Plans emerged.

But not everything in the plan happened at the time I wanted.

Still, they happened. So, I knew that my technique worked.

And I'm happy to share the techniques with you.

A 5-minute technique to identify what you’re good at and what you enjoy doing.

  1. Grab a sheet of paper. Or use your laptop if you want.

  2. List all your activities, whether at work or outside work.

  3. Create two columns.

  4. In the first column, add/drag the activities you enjoy doing.

  5. In the second column, add/drag the activities you don’t enjoy doing.

  6. Focus on your list in column 1. Rank your activities from most important to least important.

This simple exercise will give you an initial awareness of your core strengths or anti-Kryptonites and what matters most to you.

Here’s another technique to build awareness of your strengths from your environment.

Ask friends or trusted colleagues to provide feedback when they see you doing something incredible. What trait stood out for them in that situation?

Make sure to take notes. (You'll need those notes later.)

Stay or L.E.A.P.? Where do you want to go next?
