25% plus of migrants face these common obstacles

Can you land a job or build a dream all on your own?

Hey,

I want to say a brief hello!

And ask: what are you looking forward to in the coming months?

Other than Christmas of course.

(Less than 4 months left before 2025 year-end. Can you believe it?)

Anyway, I wanted to share a few sneak peeks of projects/ideas that excite me, and updates on past projects.

Quick insights about the EU labor market reality: if you’re a professional aspiring to live and work in EU, or move to another EU country, this is for you.

The 2021 EU Labor Force survey shows that:

More than one-quarter of migrants reported facing obstacles to finding a suitable job.

The common obstacles:

  • host country language skills

  • recognition of formal qualification obtained abroad, and

  • absence of suitable jobs

Having little or no skills in the main host country language reduces the likelihood of employment.

Thus, migrants are primarily concentrated in elementary occupations (38.6% of migrants, compared to 16.2% of native workers)

Further, migrants are strongly underrepresented in high-skilled non-manual occupations (23.4% of migrants, compared to 48.1% of native workers).

This “brain waste” happens because many don’t prepare early for the realities of new labor markets, different hiring practices, and cultural adjustments.

But don't lose hope yet. Other migrants found a way around the obstacles.

And in my last webinar, a fellow coach based in Berlin, Germany shared her #1 strategy for finding a job.

Here are some takeaways:

  • Let people know that you exist, especially if you're moving to a country where you know no one.

  • Reach out to at least 100 people, outside and within your network.

  • Make relationship-building an ongoing process.

You can learn more about Chiara's Project 100 strategy in this video (the short version is less than 15 mins!).

In the webinar, I also shared some mistakes and lessons learned as a migrant professional.
